Summary:Occurred 22nd February 2025. Chernihiv region, UkraineThe formation of such an ice circle in the middle of a river is a natural phenomenon. It is called an “ice disk” or “ice wheel”. It is caused by the circular movement of water under the ice, when the current twists a piece of ice in a circular motion. Over time, this piece of ice gradually grinds against the surrounding ice, acquiring a perfect round shape. This phenomenon most often occurs in slow-moving rivers or ponds at temperatures near freezing, when the ice is thin and mobile. It is a rare but well-documented natural phenomenon.
