Title:VV4898 Tourist gets a surprise pelican peck at a zoo
Date:14th November 2024
Summary:This is the unexpected moment that a man was attempting to take a photo with a pelican in China, only to have the bird envelop his head with its beak. On November 10, 2024, at the Jiuding Mountain Wildlife Park in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, the incident occurred when the man, mistaking the motionless pelican for a statue, drew close for a selfie. Suddenly, the pelican reacted by enclosing the man's head in its large beak. According to Mr. Huang, a staff member interviewed by Guo+ Community, while the pelican’s bite is not painful due to its soft beak, it does have a strong fishy smell, often described as having bad breath. Mr. Huang explained that pelicans often exhibit such behaviour. They attempt to bite using their large beaks but cannot actually grip tightly. Fortunately, the man was unharmed, though likely a bit shaken and certainly more aware of the living nature of his supposed 'statue.'
