Summary:A one-and-half-year-old elephant calf was rescued by members of a tribal community in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The incident took place at Kuttampuzha forest in Ernakulam district, where the calf remained stuck in a 8-foot deep mud pit on the intervening night of July 15 and 16. The calf was a part of a large heard, including its mother, which had come to drink water from a nearby stream. Notably, the heard waited for the baby elephant 500 meters from the spot all night long and also thwacked the sides of the pit in an effort to rescue the calf. However, their efforts did not fructify as the land was marshy. According to Section Forest Officer V.S. Santosh, a local resident, who had gone to collect mushrooms from the forest in the early hours of July 16, saw the calf stuck in a pit and informed them immediately. Forest officials reached the spot by 11 am and rescued the elephant after much effort. First, the officials gave a drink of water to the calf, after the animal regained some strength the two-hour-long rescue effort was commenced. A group of tribals and officials joined forces to pull the calf out of the pit. Once outside the pit, the calf ran towards the forest and rejoined the family
